Publishing: an overview

Welcome to our guide to publishing

The guide aims to cover all areas of the academic publishing process. There is advice on how to select a journal for publication, including a number of useful online resources to assist in the selection process. The growing problem of predatory publishing is addressed with advice from several sources on how to identify and avoid predatory publishers.

Open Access publishing is a growing area and it provides academics and researchers with a wide range of excellent journals to consider when looking for a publisher for their articles. The guide offers an update on the latest Open Access developments in Ireland, Europe and beyond, as well as information on the Science Direct Ireland Deal from Elsevier which commenced in 2020 and aims to cover the Article Processing Charge (APC) cost of 70% of Irish academic articles published in Elsevier journals.

There is an overview of Metrics and the Researcher profile and the key tools that you can use to select the most suitable journals to publish and then how to maximise your research impact.

The guide features key information on MTU's own SWORD Digital Repository and the various opportunities it presents for MTU staff and researchers to publish their articles, conference papers, grey literature and other resources online to reach a wide audience.
