Text to Speech

 

1. Find an article in HTML Full Text that you would like to have read to you.

2. Click on the hamburger icon to view the settings menu, then click on Reading Voice and select the accent you would like to listen to.

 

3.  Click on the Settings icon to open a window that allows you to adjust highlighting settings, word colour, scrolling etc.

  • language button: Click the Reading Language button to select an accent or voice in which you would like the text read to you and then click the Listen button.

  • text hover button: Click the Read on Hover button to turn this feature on or off. When enabled, this feature starts reading a paragraph when you hover your pointer over it.

  • text enlarge button: Click the Enlarge Text button to display the sentence being read at the bottom of the screen in a larger font size and simultaneous text highlighting.

  • text mode button: Click the Text Mode button to open a pop-up window on the screen displaying the current page in a text-only version. The controls at the top of the text window allow you to play, pause, or stop the audio, alter the text formatting, adjust the reading speed and maximize the window size.

  • page mask button: Click the Page Mask button to dim the screen except a highlighted area that follows where you hover the pointer with your mouse or touch the screen on mobile devices.

  • download button: Click the Download button to download an mp3 file with an audio version of the article or your selected text from the article you are viewing.

  • help button: Click the Help button to access the onboard help information about using the text-to-speech tool.

4. Click on the Clock icon to adjust your reading speed

Use Text-To-Speech to Hear a Section of an Article

You may choose to listen only to a section of an article.

Highlight the passage of text you would like to be read out loud. A new mini-toolbar appears. Click the Listen button on the mini-toolbar.

Downloading Text-to-Speech MP3s

You can choose to download an MP3 audio file of an article being read to your device.

You will see the following message on the screen:

"The audio file you are about to download can be used for personal use only. This means that you are not allowed to distribute this file to anyone else, or use it for any other purpose than to listen to it yourself."

Click The Agree and Download File button on the bottom of the screen to continue downloading the file.

The file may take a couple of minutes to download.  When the download is finished, you will see the file in the top right of your screen.  Click on the file to listen to it or save it to a new location on your device.
