Step by Step instructions on adding Library Guides to Canvas

Introduction

Library Guides are tailored resources that support your students’ research, assignments, and learning. By adding a Library Guide directly into your Canvas module, you make it easier for students to access high-quality, subject-specific information right where they need it—within their course. This quick guide will show you how to seamlessly embed a Library Guide into Canvas, helping students connect with relevant resources at the point of learning

1. Add a New Item

  • Click on the + Icon in the unit where you want to add the Library Guide 

  • Select External Tool from the Add dropdown menu.

2. Choose Library Research Resources

  • Select Library Research Resources from the Options

3. Configure the Item

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the Add Item box.

  • Do not edit the URL box.

  • At this point, you can rename the Page Name (it defaults to Library Research Resource).

    • Example: rename to Botany Subject Guide.

  • You can choose to load in a new tab (recommended to leave unticked).

  • Select Add Item.

 

4. Embed the Correct Guide

In your unit, click on the guide you just added.

  • If renamed, it will display as your chosen title (e.g., Botany Subject Guide).

  • If not renamed, it will display as Library Research Resource

  • From the Content Type dropdown menu, select Full LibGuide.

  • In the Guide box, select the guide you want to embed:

    • Either scroll through the list, or

    • Type the first few letters of the guide’s name.

 

  • From the Guide Page dropdown menu, select Home.

  • Click on Embed Content.

 

5. View the Guide

  • The selected Library Guide will now appear in your Unit
