Google Scholar is Google's academic search engine. It allows you to find academic level material quickly. However, while it is a very useful research tool, there is some MTU Library content that is not available via Google Scholar. It is best to use Google Scholar together with Multisearch and other subscribed MTU Library resources.

 

Link MTU Kerry Library to Google Scholar

Did you know you can change your Google Scholar settings so it alerts you if the article is available at MTU Kerry library?

Follow these steps to connect MTU Kerry Library to Google Scholar:

 

1. Go to Google Scholar and click on the hamburger icon (3 horizontal bars) on the top left of the screen.

 

2. Scroll down to the bottom of the menu that pops up and click on Settings.

 

 

3Click Library links in the menu on the top left of the page.

 

4. Search for MTU Kerry,  select Munster Technological University MTU Kerry and click Save.       

 Note: Leave the Open WorldCat box ticked if you want to be able to link to freely available content.  

 

5. Now you're ready to search! On the results page, look for results with the Full-Text @ MTU Kerry links.

  • identify highly cited literature

Disadvantages of Google Scholar

Google Scholar has the following limitations:

  • not everything in Google Scholar is scholarly and Google has not shared what criteria they use to select "scholarly" material.
  • it is not known exactly what is searched and results vary in quality
  • coverage is incomplete - while Scholar may be useful, it should not be the only resource you use.
  • it is essential researchers evaluate sources before using them in research or assignments.
  • citation information is not always reliable

Google Scholar browser button

Add the Google Scholar button as an extension to your browser. 

Google Scholar Button is a plug-in and is available for Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Safari.  You should download the plug-in for the browser you use frequently.  Once you have downloaded the plug-in, the Google Scholar Button  should appear in your browser tool bar
